The dual-Olympian turned long-distance superstar excited the water in 5th place with a 44:25 swim before riding a 3rd-best 4:30:40 bike split. After dismounting, Raelert turned on the afterburners and ran a race-fastest 2:40:07 marathon to take the win with a comfortable margin over fellow German, Maik Twelsiek, who finished in 8:11:36. Slovenian athlete David Plese rounded out the podium in 8:19:13.
Hungarian Erika Csomor has taken the women’s title in 8:59:31. Csomor exited the water in 6th place and used race-best bike and run splits to take the win over Sweden’s Asa Lundstrom and Ireland’s Eimear Mullan in a relatively close race. This is Csomor’s second Ironman Austria title after having won here in 2004.
