Australian Para Triathletes Shine in Yokohama, Securing Four Medals on Road to Paralympics
Lauren Parker secures 15th straight win; Anu Francis, Justin Godfrey, and Thomas Goodman also medal as Paralympic qualification heats up.
Australia's para triathlon team delivered an impressive performance at the World Triathlon Para Series in Yokohama, clinching four medals as the hunt for crucial ranking points intensifies with just over 100 days to go until the Paralympic Games.
Lauren Parker extended her golden run to fifteen-straight wins in the PTWC category, leading the Australian team's success. Thomas Goodman's standout performance, securing his first-ever World Triathlon Para Series medal with bronze, was another highlight of the event.
Athlete Highlights
Lauren Parker (PTWC)
Parker secured the gold medal, finishing 1 minute and 25 seconds ahead of her closest competitors, Leanne Taylor (CAN) and Jessica Ferreira (BRA). The 35-year-old recently secured three gold medals at the para-cycling Road World Cup in Belgium as she continues her pursuit of qualifying for two sports at the Paralympics.
Rankings: Parker remains in first place in the Paralympic Games Qualification Rankings.
Anu Francis (PTS2)
Francis secured the silver medal, marking back-to-back World Triathlon Para Series podium finishes following her maiden victory in Devonport earlier in the year. Francis finished behind Hailey Danz (USA), who clinched the women's title, while hometown hero Yukako Hata (JAP) rounded out the podium.
Rankings: Francis stays in second place in the Paralympic Games Qualification Rankings.
Justin Godfrey (PTS3)
Paralympic Aspirations: Godfrey bolstered his Paralympic aspirations by securing a silver medal. He finished behind Michael Herter (FRA), who established a substantial lead during the swim, which ultimately proved insurmountable, with Hwang Tae Kim (KOR) finishing in third place.
Rankings: Godfrey's fourth-place finish in Yokohama propelled him up one spot to fourth in the Paralympic Games Qualification Rankings.
Thomas Goodman (PTS2):
Goodman made a statement by clinching a maiden World Triathlon Para Series podium with a bronze medal, incredibly in only his third World Triathlon Para Series start. Goodman's performance positions him as a contender for a spot on Australia's Paralympic team, sending him surging up the Paralympic Games Qualification Rankings.
Rankings: The South Australian's bronze moved him up three spots to eighth in the rankings, with the top-nine ranked athletes clinching quota positions for their nations at the end of the qualification period on 1st July.
Notable Performances and Results
- Glen Jarvis (PTS2): Secured fourth place, finishing two minutes behind teammate Thomas Goodman. His fourth-place finish in Yokohama propelled him up one spot to eleventh in the rankings.
- Sally Pilbeam (PTS4): Secured fourth place in her category and climbed one spot in the rankings to third.
- Nic Beveridge (PTWC), Jeremy Peacock (PTS4), and Jack Howell (PTS5): Finished fifth in their respective categories. Beveridge and Peacock slid two spots in the rankings following their fifth-place finishes but crucially maintain their positions within the top-nine. Howell remains in third place in the rankings.
- David Bryant (PTS5) and Sam Harding (PTVI): Rounded out the Australian performances, securing seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively. Both retain their positions within the top-nine of the Paralympic Games Qualification Rankings.
Rankings Update and the Road Ahead
In addition to Goodman, Jarvis, Godfrey, and Pilbeam, several other Australian athletes maintained their positions in the Paralympic Games Qualification Rankings despite their performances in Yokohama. Parker (1st, PTWC), Francis (2nd, PTS2), Howell (3rd, PTS5), Bryant (7th, PTS5), and Harding (8th, PTVI) all retained their top-nine positions.
Despite their absence in Yokohama, Grace Brimelow (PTS4), Hannah MacDougall (PTS4), Maggie Sandles (PTVI), and Caroline Baird (PTVI) each dropped one spot in the rankings. Liam Twomey (PTS4) experienced a more significant drop of two spots. However, Sandles (8th) and Twomey (8th) maintain their positions within the top-nine despite their rankings slipping.
As the Paralympic Qualification period draws to a close on July 1, 2024, six ranking races remain for Australians to bolster their position in the rankings and earn a spot at the Games. These include the World Para Cups in Samarkand, Vigo, Taranto, and Besancon, along with the World Triathlon Para Series events in Swansea and Montreal.
