Germany’s Britta Martin made up for an eight minute plus swim deficit by riding and running her way to the 2012 Ironman Western Australia title. Martin lost more time than she had predicted to Keat but did not let that get to her.
Keat looked like the one to beat midway through the race but behind her Martin was getting stronger and stronger.
One of the most impressive performances was by Sydney’s Rebecca Hoschke. Hoschke works full time and somehow manages to fit in enough training to compete with full time professional triathletes.
Hoschke was second to Martin at Port Macquarie 70.3 at the end of October. Both women showed that they can run. Both Martin and Hoschke are small framed women and that they can push out that much power on the bike and run these times is amazing.
Bree Wee pushed the field and made them work for their spoils. Wee was the race leader after 23.3kms on the run but was eventually over taken by Keat and eventually finished 4th overall.
Martin, originally from Germany, races under the Kiwi flag since moving to NZ in 2007 with her Kiwi partner.
