Christian Kemp, Kempy to all that know him, has made the difficult decision to pull out of Ironman Melbourne to instead focus on the rest of 2013. This was both a difficult decision yet the right decision to make. Those close to Kempy knew how nervous he was about doing his first Ironman and with two big wins under his belt already this year he has some much bigger 70.3 goals ahead of him to focus on.
Speaking to Kempy today he acknowledged that he was not quite 100% prepared for Ironman Melbourne and going in to the race with this in the back of his mind was not a good idea. “I am really focused on the US 70.3 Pro Championships in Utah on May 4. Going in to Melbourne slightly underdone with a couple of minor niggles around my knee will most likely upset my preparation for Utah. This is one of my big goal races. I have a great base from my Melbourne training and this will definitely put me in a good place in six weeks time.”
There is some big news from Kempy regarding his Ironman aspirations this year. “I have decided that I will be racing in Ironman Frankfurt. The appeal of this race is that Pete Jacobs and Sebastian Kienle will be racing. These guys are the benchmark in Ironman right now and I want to test myself against the best. I will be far better prepared for this July race.”
The two races Kempy won this year really took a lot out of him. In particular, Geelong was a race where he pushed himself harder than he had planned.
Some great news for Kempy is that he has been finally getting the partners on board that will work with him over the next year. As we have always said on Trizone Kempy is one of the fastest over the three disciplines in the world. Getting all three to work in the same race has been the challenge. This is now sorted.
Trek was the first major partner to come on board recently followed by Mavic last week. He is in talks with a clothing company and also has some possibilities with glasses and running shoes. “It is great that now I am getting the support and partnerships that have always been just out of reach. My partners, along with Shotz Sports Nutrition and my coach Chris Hanrahan from PB3 have enabled me to settle down, train and race with the confidence that comes with having a great team around me.”
Following on from Ironman Frankfurt Kemp will then focus on the championship races later in the year. “I have some big goals this year and building on my current form is going to give me the best chance ever to achieve them.”
