Iconic Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Returns to San Francisco Bay

Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, is set to take place Sunday, June 11, in San Francisco. Now in its third iteration, fan-favorite Escape from Alcatraz’s Aquathlon (a 750m swim and 5 km run) will again take place the day before the Tri, on Saturday, June 10. More than 10,000 athletes enter the random drawing each year, with hopes of securing one of the 2,000 coveted slots.
Attracting Olympians, world champions, ardent age groupers and challenged athletes, triathletes from all over the world will take over the streets and waters of San Francisco for a chance at glory and to be a part of the infamous history of the island, a once inescapable federal prison, which now illuminates a mysterious challenge to athletes worldwide — to “Escape from Alcatraz.”
Exploring the beauty of San Francisco, triathletes will embark on a grueling 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shoreline of Marina Green, an 18-mile twisting bike ride through the Presidio, and an 8-mile trail run out to Baker Beach and back, while also encountering the infamous 200-plus-step Sand Ladder. Fans can experience the excitement of the race first-hand at the Marina Green, where the swim ends, and the athlete transition area and finish line are easily visible.
