More than 2,000 athletes will descend on St Kilda for Sunday’s IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne, taking on a 1.9km swim, 90km ride and 21.1km run.

The event will see athletes hit the water of Port Phillip Bay for the swim, with the ride taking in two laps of Melbourne’s famous Beach Road, before running a half-marathon along the St Kilda and Elwood waterfront, with the event culminating at the famous IRONMAN 70.3 finish line in Catani Gardens.

Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of Oceania for The IRONMAN Group, said that the team was looking forward to bringing IRONMAN 70.3 racing to Melbourne for a second time in 2022.

“GWM IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne is city racing at its finest,” said Meyer. “The course is centrally located, it’s spectator friendly and with a super quick scenic course it’s the ideal venue for newcomers and seasoned athletes keen to record a fast time.

“It was great be able to hold the inaugural event back in March with this Sunday’s race to have the added excitement of a professional field battling it out for the GWM IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne title,” he said. “We’re set to have some of the region’s top male and female professional triathletes go head-to-head this weekend, with both races shaping up to be exciting.”

The women’s professional field features a number of athletes who will challenge for the title, including multiple IRONMAN 70.3 race winners Lotte Wilms, Hannah Wells, Sarah Crowley, Ellie Salthouse and Amelia Watkinson.

The men’s race is highlighted by former IRONMAN 70.3 race winners Steve McKenna and Nicholas Free, with the top two seeded athletes set to be pushed by the likes of 2022 Noosa Triathlon winner Charlie Quin and fellow Noosa top ten finishers Yoann Colin and Mitchell Cunningham.
