There are moments in sports that outline why competitors, year after year push themselves to a limit. Maybe it is a record, a first timer, or something that is not as blatant. Today at the season finale of the Gatorade Triathlon Series it was an ambience of pure passion for the sport and those competing that defined this day.
After a comprehensive season of spectacular racing in outstanding locations all around Melbourne and it’s surrounds, the Gatorade Triathlon Series wrapped another year of this exciting competition with its most popular triathlon “The St Kilda Triathlon at Catani Gardens, St Kilda.
In what seemed to be a closely fought race on all levels and categories, it all started with the Male elite category turning into an all-out fierce competition from start to finish. Vying for top line honours twice in a row, Veteran triathlete Craig McKenzie powered out of the swim behind Nathan Barry and closely followed by Kristian McCartney. The bike leg saw McKenzie still following Barry with McCartney and Josh Dew close behind. The surprising finish saw ITU Junior and an up and coming triathlete Marcel Washington cross the finish line first with a blistering time of 56:07 ahead of all the elites. Craig McKenzie 6 time Series Winner crossed the tape in 56:13.
The women’s elite category turned into a one-sided affair with pocket powerhouse Madeleine Oldfield blitzing the field right from Bike Transition. Following her astounding fitness peak from Race 3 , Oldfield crossed the line in 1:03:23 followed by Wendy McAlpine 1:05:02 and Lyndal Dew 1:08:36.
On April 1st the Series celebrated 22 glorious years of this iconic race with a convergence of entertainment, music, merchandise stalls, sponsor marquees, face-painting, band and unbelievable spot prizes.
To celebrate, the prize pool for the St Kilda Triathlon has an amazing $5,000 for the elite male and female fields.
The Active Feet Fun Tri, held in conjunction with the Gatorade Triathlon Series, turned out to be an enormous amount of fun for all participants.
