Olympic Medalists Challenge Defending Champ Bogen at Ironman 70.3 Worlds

The men's race at the 2024 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupō is shaping up as a fascinating clash between established middle-distance talent and Olympic firepower, with defending champion Rico Bogen facing his toughest test yet.

Bogen, who claimed the title last year at just 23 years old, returns to defend his crown in only his third year as a professional. But the German champion's path to a repeat victory faces serious obstacles from the Olympic ranks.

Local hero Hayden Wilde leads the Olympic contingent and brings hometown advantage to the mix. The Taupō-born athlete, fresh off his silver medal performance in Paris, has already shown his 70.3 prowess with a dominant win at Ironman 70.3 Melbourne. His familiarity with the course runs deep - he grabbed third place at 70.3 Taupō back in 2019.

Adding extra spice to the Olympic rivalry, France's Léo Bergère enters the fray with an unblemished 70.3 record. The Paris bronze medalist has won every 70.3 race he's entered, setting up an intriguing rematch with Wilde on the longer course. Belgium's Jelle Geens rounds out the Olympic talent joining the field.

The local crowd gets a second hometown hero to cheer for in Kyle Smith. The Taupō native brings course-specific experience as the 2019 and 2023 Ironman 70.3 Taupō champion, making him a serious threat for the podium.

Beyond the individual glory, there's significant prize money at stake. The winner takes home $75,000, but the real payday could come from the inaugural Ironman Pro Series standings. Currently, Patrick Lange leads the series but won't race in Taupō, leaving the door open for Matt Hanson, who sits in second place. However, Hanson needs to make up a 770-point deficit, with only 691 points possible from a win.

The men's race takes place on Sunday 5th December, following the women's race on Saturday. For those looking to catch the action, the race will stream free across multiple platforms.
