Parker Chases Historic Fifth World Title Despite Post-Paralympic Fatigue

Paralympic champion Lauren Parker stands on the brink of Australian para triathlon history as she targets a record-equalling fifth consecutive world title at the World Triathlon Para Championships in Torremolinos, Spain.

Victory would see the 35-year-old match Bill Chaffey's record for most world titles by an Australian, adding to her impressive streak that began in Lausanne 2019. However, Parker admits this could be her toughest challenge yet, coming off an extended break following her historic Paralympics where she became the first Australian woman to win two gold medals in two sports at a single Games.

"Initially I wasn't racing. I thought maybe I won't, I'll just go home. But then I knew what I would feel watching the race from home, I would feel regret," Parker revealed. "Being the current world champion I want to be here for the other girls to race and beat me. If they want to become world champion they have to beat me."

The toll of her Paralympic campaign has been significant, with Parker taking five weeks away from training to recover. "Since Paris and crossing the finish line in my last race, the road race for cycling, there was no training," she explained. "I was that exhausted, my arms were shattered and sore. I felt like I had just done an Ironman."

Despite these challenges, the opportunity to equal Chaffey's remarkable achievement adds extra motivation. The pair's paths crossed briefly at the end of his career, notably when they both claimed bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"He's an incredible person," Parker said of Chaffey. "He was an amazing athlete, to win five para triathlon world titles is just incredible. For me to potentially win on Friday and get my fifth, I wouldn't be more proud. I look up to Bill, he's an amazing athlete and role model for the sport to be at the same level as him, I couldn't be happier."

While the physical preparation may not be ideal, Parker's champion mindset remains unwavering as she seeks to extend her remarkable winning streak in Spain.
