Pete Jacobs has shown his intentions for 2014 by winning the Pealr iZumi Huskisson Long Course over second placed Tim Reed. The two leaders ran side by side until the 10km mark when Jacobs surged and the rubber band broke.
A lead pack of seven males turned at the half way mark on the swim with Sam Appleton pushing the pace. Sam Douglas also took it to the pack towards the end of the swim. A surprise to the guys in the front pack was Tim Reed’s presence. Reed has obviously been doing some secret training. This is an ominous sign to his competitors as 2014 starts to shape up.
Out on the bike Michael Fox found the pace at the front with Appleton, Reed and Jacobs very fast. Chasing the lead guys was Paul Ambrose, David Mainwaring who caught Kieran Roche and Lindsey Wall within the first 10kms on the bike.
This chase pack stayed together until Ambrose made a move at about 55kms in. The three chase guys stayed together until the run.
Ambrose soon caught Michael Fox with Fox holding on until a few kms from T2 when Ambrose managed to put about 30sec in to him. Sam Douglas just didn’t have a race in him today and pulled out after the first lap to save himself for another day. Chasing behind these guys were Josh Rix and Todd Israel.
Reed came off a massive week of training and did not look (or sound) as fresh as Jacobs on the run.
Jacobs could also see and hear this and noticed that Reed did not seem to have his strength on inclines. So at the 10km turnaround and with a short little rise Jacobs pushed ahead and managed to get the break he needed.
Just behind the lead two was Sam Appleton who did not look as fresh or as comfortable as David Mainwaring who had run past a few guys to look like he might threaten Appleton for the last spot on the podium. Nearing the 9km mark Mainwaring had moved in to be within striking distance of Appleton. Appleton then pushed ahead after the 10km turnaround to cement his position by the time he made the final turn at 15kms to head back to the finishline.
