Australians Joe Gambles and Leon Griffin dominated the Ironman 70.3 Timberman triathlon in the USA over the weekend. It seems almost every weekend we see international long course triathlon events with podiums dominated by Australians. Joe Gambles is arguably the top 70.3 triathlete around currently and there is a host of other Australians right on his heels.
Gambles and Griffin used their strength on the bike and worked together to completely clear away from the rest of the field. The difference in bike pace between the two lead Aussies and the other pro males was significant. They both rode almost 9mins faster than 3rd placed Kevin Collington.
It was a different story at Boulder a couple of weeks ago with Gambles winning in a time of 3:44 and Griffin coming 6th in a time of 3:52. The altitude may have been a factor with Griffin 3mins back on the bike and 4 1/2 mins back on the run.
Gambles loved having Griffin there although felt he was just a little to close for comfort for his liking. Gambles has had a stella year so far. He recently won the Boulder 70.3 in a class field and also won the Syracuse 70.3 in June. Gambles built up some long miles earlier this year when he was back in Australia to have a crack at Ironman Melbourne. He raced at the 2XU Falls Creek Australian Long Course Champs with a second to Tim Reed in the middle of training for Melbourne.
will now be focusing all of his training on taking the Ironman 70.3 World Champs in Las Vegas. This is the race he wants to win.
Leon Griffin is back to his old form after temporarily stepping out of pro life to spend a year at home in Bendigo, working at the bank and building a house. While not being a full time pro in 2011 Griffin did win the 2XU Falls Creek Long Course, Cairns Half and Shepparton half Ironman. This year he has had a 2nd at the San Juan Puerto Rico Ironman 70.3, 2nd at Urban Hotels 2.80.20 (Geelong), 4th at California Ironman 70.3 and a 4th at the Urban Hotels Ironman Australia and a 6th at Ironman Cairns.
