TrainingPeaks Just Bought IndieVelo - Here's Why It's a Big Deal
Single-developer virtual cycling platform IndieVelo joins TrainingPeaks, promising seamless integration for coaches and athletes while staying free through March 2025.

TrainingPeaks has snagged IndieVelo, the upstart virtual cycling platform that's been turning heads with its rapid development and anti-cheating focus. And here's the kicker (pardon the pun) - they're rebranding it as TrainingPeaks Virtual and making it free until March 2025.
If you're wondering why this matters, here's the scoop: IndieVelo isn't just another Zwift clone. It's the brainchild of Dr. George Gilbert, the same guy who used to run Zwift's anti-cheating programs. Gilbert, who casually happens to have a PhD in Astrophysics from Cambridge, built the entire platform single-handedly, pushing out weekly updates that had the indoor training community buzzing.
The platform recently hit 40,000 registered users - not too shabby for a one-person show. Now, with TrainingPeaks' backing, Gilbert is joining their team full-time, bringing his expertise in realistic racing physics and anti-cheating technology to a much bigger stage.
For athletes and coaches already using TrainingPeaks (and let's face it, that's a lot of us), this means your structured workouts will sync directly to a virtual training platform that actually cares about accuracy. No more power numbers that make you look like a Tour de France pro when you're really just trying to survive your FTP test.
The immediate changes? If you're already using IndieVelo, you can now log in with your TrainingPeaks account. Founders Club members are getting a sweet deal - a free year of TrainingPeaks Premium (worth $125). Everyone else can use the platform for free through March 2025, after which it'll be part of the TrainingPeaks Premium package.
TrainingPeaks' president Lee Gerakos isn't hiding their ambitions here. They want to make it easier for coaches to get their athletes training properly indoors, without the usual headaches of juggling multiple platforms and subscriptions.
With this move, TrainingPeaks is basically saying they want a piece of the indoor training action but they're coming at it from a different angle - focusing on making indoor training more authentic and integrated with your regular training plan.
For the everyday athlete, this could mean the end of toggling between different apps just to get through your indoor workout. And for coaches? They're getting new tools like virtual group rides and custom-branded events baked right into their existing coaching platform.
The big question now is whether TrainingPeaks can maintain IndieVelo's reputation for rapid development and innovation or if this will turn into another corporate acquisition that slows everything down. For now, though, it looks like indoor training just got a lot more interesting.
