Wilde Claims Tight Victory at Tinman Triathlon
Hayden Wilde overcame a 39-second swim deficit to outrun James Corbett by 14 seconds at Mount Maunganui's Tinman Triathlon, clocking 1:44:01 for the win.
Olympic medalist Hayden Wilde outdueled emerging talent James Corbett in a thrilling battle at Mount Maunganui's Tinman Triathlon, winning by just 14 seconds after a strategic race that came down to the final kilometers.
The drama unfolded early when Corbett dominated the swim, completing the 2.5km course in 14:51 to establish a 39-second lead over Wilde. This opening move set the stage for a tactical battle between the seasoned Olympian and the ambitious challenger.
Wilde responded with a masterful bike leg, posting the day's fastest split of 54:16 over the 40km course. However, Corbett's solid 55:01 bike performance kept him within striking distance. A swift transition from Corbett – completing T2 in just 54 seconds compared to Wilde's 1:29 – brought the race back to virtually even terms as they began the run.
The decisive moment came during the 10km run, where Wilde's experience and renowned running prowess proved the difference. His 31:43 split gradually pulled him clear of Corbett, who responded with an impressive 32:25. Wilde crossed the line in 1:44:01, with Corbett following in 1:44:15.
The battle for third played out well behind the leading duo, with Lachlan Haycock securing the final podium spot in 1:50:21. His consistent performance across all three disciplines, highlighted by a solid 34:31 run split, put him clear of fourth-placed Ivan Abele.
For Wilde, this victory comes as part of his preparation for next month's Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupo. The close competition from Corbett suggests New Zealand's depth in men's triathlon continues to grow, with the gap between the Olympic medalist and the next generation narrowing.
